The Briles Effect

Baylor football is on the verge of signing its 2nd straight top 25 class (according to the 247Sports rankings). The class of 2013 which will be sealed tomorrow with signed letters of intent is currently ranked 25th by 247 Sports. And they are off to a great start for the class of 2014 with three highly rated commitments. Why has Art Briles and this staff had so much success at recruiting talented players to Baylor University?

They are developing players and sending them to the NFL. Every one points to the success that Robert Griffin III had at Baylor and now the NFL. Griffin followed up his junior Heisman Trophy winning campaign with a great rookie season for the Washington Redskins. This past week he was named Rookie of the Year. But Griffin is only one of 5 1st round NFL draft picks that have come from Baylor University in the last 4 years under Art Briles' stewardship. Let's take a look at current Big12 teams and the track record of success at developing players to be 1st round picks in the NFL in the last 4 NFL drafts:

The current Big12 teams have had 20 1st round picks in the last 4 NFL drafts. Baylor and Oklahoma State are tied with 5 each. Oklahoma has had 4 1st round picks (all in 2010). Texas has had 2. TCU, Kansas State, Texas Tech and West Virginia have each had one first rounder.

Briles has brought the Baylor program a long way. 1st Team All-American WR Terrance Williams is expected to go in the 1st round of the 2013 NFL draft (Mel Kiper has him 23rd currently). It all starts with national signing day- getting talented players on campus. But then you have to develop those players. Briles and the staff at Baylor are developing an outstanding reputation for developing guys and preparing them for the NFL.
