Andy Katz's way too early Top 25 for 2012-2013

  • He assumes PJ3 and Miller both leave and pegs us at #10:

    10. Baylor

The Bears definitely will lose Quincy Acy. But what would happen if Baylor didn't lose Perry Jones III and/or Quincy Miller? This team would be in contention for No. 1. It's unlikely they'll retain both, but Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip should form one of the top backcourts in the country. And the Bears continue to recruit as well as any school. Adding Isaiah Austin is huge. Baylor has become a consistent Big 12 title contender with Kansas and that doesn't appear to be ending.

Andy Katz takes a (very) early look at the top 25 for 2012-13.

  • This can't be right... He doesn't have A&M in his top 40, never mind the top 25... It was less than a year ago that Aggies were assuring everyone that they would enter the SEC to offer a challenge to Kentucky as one of the top basketball programs in the conference. Katz has clearly lost his touch.

Aggy's collapse was swift. it is amazing that they were pre season favorite this season - by the coaches!

Katz later mentioned a few other teams to watch:

"Our Top 25 poll will generate plenty of buzz, but it left out a few teams that deserve mention. Don’t sleep on Murray State, which returns Isaiah Canaan and coach Steve Prohm. I’ll be stunned if Murray doesn’t make its way back into the Top 25. I also really like Minnesota again. The Gophers should be a real tough out with a healthy Trevor Mbakwe, Rodney Williams and a returning perimeter. And Cincinnati should be in the mix in the Big East with a core returning that played exceptionally well down the stretch."

A lesson to those who think that our program has grown to the point that we'll prosper even if Drew left. It's possible, but absolutely not probable. A&M had the arrow pointing in the right direction, but now look at how uncertain their future is. Yes, we are in a power conference, with alot of home-grown talent, but still have little successful history, and relatively limited fan support.

...and even with Drew, there are no guarantees. Let's all savor our 2 Elite 8 seasons, remembering how fortunate were were during these last several seasons in the injury department...it has been pretty remarkable.

basketball teams can change so much in a given year. keeping pierre and miller vs. losing both, for example, would be a massive difference.

even with the same coach a down year is possible in cbb. UNC and Florida both went NIT after winning it all. but your point is well taken.

Great point on the injuries...I've thought of this many times over the last couple of years too. Other than Stargell Love with a stress fracture some time last season, when was the last time someone missed a game?

Agree. UNC didn't even make the NIT a couple years ago.

this is all true, but now our football team doesn't suck, bordering on prospering...aggy can't claim that, plus they get to play much tougher teams. good luck with that, ags.

  • Hard to say that A&M was still trending upward coming into this season. At best they were stuck in neutral.

They had made 6 straight appearances in the NCAA tournament, but they only made it to the second weekend once in those six appearances. Their recruiting was average at best and not trending upward.

Compared to Baylor that has made the NCAA tournament only three of the last five years, but have made it to the regional finals two of those years where they lost both times to the eventual champs. Add on the fact that our recruiting is trending upward, I imagine there would be many, many coaches look to Waco as a legit option to go and win.
