Baylor Free Agents

  • I didn't see these posted on another thread, so here they are:

    Tracy Robertson - Texans
    Nicholas Jean-Baptiste - Ravens
    Elliott Coffey - Broncos

  • Surprised Issac Williams did not get picked up. Seemed like he had a stellar pro day.

Agreed. Really pulling for him to get a shot.

  • Does anyone know the logistics of signing as a FA out of college? How long is the team commitment, is there a signing bonus, do they start getting a paycheck right away, etc.?

  • I was reading an article about the Cowboys and the reason for their free agent success. In the past they have offered up to $100K signing bonus to sought after free agents. The article said with the new agreement there is now a $75K signing bonus so yes, there can get a nice signing bonus.

  • You get a signing bonus, your agent takes a cut, taxes take a cut, then you work your A off to get cut on the last day, make the practice squad, or the team.

I suspect the issue with Issac is lack of production. He had a very good pro day, but there wasn't much else. Hope he gets a chance but I can understand why he hasn't signed anywhere.

    Wrong.

There is now a $75,000 rookie free agent bonus cap. That's $75,000 split among dozens of rookie free agents.

The Cowboys have never given out a $100,000 signing bonus to a single rookie free agent. They may have exceeded $100,000 combined on several occasions.

Tony Romo's rookie free agent signing bonus was $12,000, which he took even though the Broncos offered him $15,000.

  • Heard Williams has talked to Broncos and Jets...but, these usually happen fast if they happen so we'll see. Happy for the three who are getting a chance so far in the FA market.

So other than the signing bonus, are they getting a paycheck or anything else from the team from now until they get cut or make the team/practice squad?

Just curious how the process works because lots of guys sign that don't get drafted and then get cut.

They get a regular paycheck for as long as they are with the team, but it doesn't start until camp. For a typical free agent, making it from the beginning of camp to the final cut is worth about $100K, gross. From that, take federal and state taxes. Agent gets about 2.5%.

  • Then practice squad is around 75K or so.

Good info thanks. Not a bad haul for a short period of work. Although they should save wisely if they are getting sent packing before the season, which I presume a large percentage are. Making a practice squad aint a bad way to earn a living first year out of college. Although I'm guessing they can be cut from that at any time as well?
