Baylor vs. Ark Head to Head Comparison

  • There's a nice thread on Hogville comparing Baylor and Arkansas head-to head. On paper, Baylor looks a little stornger, but the Hog fans take comfort in tougher competition that they've faced, and in the fact that they feel their pitching is stronger than ours, and good pitching beats good hitting.

Perhaps I'm a natural pessimist, but I tend to agree with them (Blank's poor game on Saturday has shaken my confidence in him a bit). Either team obviously can win, but I think I'm favoring Arkansas. Not sure how much of a home-field advantage we'll have.

you can't be serious with this comment. the guy has one bad outing this entire season, and your "confidence is shaken" in him? how quickly you forget that he came back the next night, pitched two innings, and was absolutely filthy in those two innings.

good pitching usually does beat good hitting, but we've got a few guys who can pitch a little bit too. i doubt that their edge in pitching is much larger (if any) than our edge over Arky at the plate. it should be a close, entertaining series, but i'm confident we'll get Turley and Blank truer to form than they were in the 1st two games of the Regional.

  • Good pitching may beat good hitting sometimes, but good pitching beats poor hitting the majority of the time. Not that Arkansas is a poor hitting team, but they only had 3 guys hit over .300 for the regular season and only one over .310.

Are Turley and Blank going to blow up the radar gun? No. But a crafty lefty like Turley and a sidearmed righty like Blank aren't your typical one-two punch.

I see two 3-1, 3-2 games with us sweeping. That's just me though.

I agree with you...he's certainly earned the benefit of the doubt from his outstanding season. But Saturday's game, where he was given a 4 run cushion and couldn't maintain the lead, is burned into my memory. (I admittedly didn't see his 2 innings on Sunday.)

Feelings aren't always objective, they're sometimes subjective...and I'm not feeling as confident as I should considering our 4 seed and home field advantage. Maybe I'm buying into the SEC greatness a little too much....or maybe I don't feel like we're the same team that we were before the long layoff we had late in the season.

Yes, they admit that they are concerned about a crafty lefty like we have in Turley. We just need to manufacture a few runs for him.

They are very proud of their bullpen...

i'm not "overly" confident either because Arkansas is a really good team, i think. however, outside of OU, we've hit plenty of good pitching (agsy, OSU, and even UT to an extent) enough to win games in the past. you also have to keep in mind, about OU, we played all but one of those games as the visiting team in Oklahoma. that matters a TON when most of the games were decided by 1 run.

i would've much rather played Rice out of the Houston Regional, than Arky b/c the Hogs staff worries me, regarless of our success/lack of success against the likes of agsy, OU, and OSU. that said, we've lost a TOTAL of 4 games at Baylor Ballpark all season, so i think we have a better than 50/50 shot at losing no more than one this weekend. it's gonna be a REALLY TOUGH series though, so those of you thinking Baylor sweep should probably temper those expectations.

  • Arkansas also commits more errors that Baylor which is something to keep an eye on in the series. Their shortstop is much like Miller, but with a lower fielding percentage and a weaker bat.

Baylor must keep the mistakes to a minimum and keep hitting the ball and keep the crowd energized.

Their bullpen numbers are absolutely filthy. A couple of guys have sub-.200 OAV's and incredibly low WHIP's.

They have a lefty reliever that is going to eat us alive. The only hope is that we already have a few runs on the board by the time we see him.

guys, we should all be "worried" even if the Hogs were coming in with a team ERA over 4!! they're good enough to get to the Super Regionals, so they're a really good team. So are we though, and we're playing them in our own ballpark.

let them crunch all the numbers they want to. you can make stats say pretty much whatever you want them to, and they're just being fans using numbers to make themselves feel better about the matchup. i like the make-up of our team (physically AND mentally), and i give us a better than 50/50 shot to win this series. honestly, that's really about all you could ask for at this stage of the season.

  • This is the Sweet 16. Just like it is right to worry about Xavier, it is right to worry about Arkansas.

absolutely. i'd be worried if he had drawn Sam Houston in the Supers.

  • I'm not worried at all. I'm really just going down to hang out with my buds and drink some beer at George's/tailgate for the first time since the UT football game.

The game will be an added benefit.

But remember that other compelling stat:
Dave Van Horn in one dugout. Steve Smith in the other.
    That says a lot.

nothing you say on this subject can be taken as remotely objective knowing your deep rooted hatred for Smitty.

  • Per BaylorBaseball on Twitter, Game 1 will be Blank vs. Baxendale. Didn't see it posted elsewhere. If we can get a win in that first game, will be nice to have our ace up to close out the series.

i've got no problem with this. now both Turley and Blank will be pitching on their regular rest. game 1 is BIG, and you really want your #1 going in that one, if possible, but i think the drop off from Turley to Blank is negligible, if there's even a drop off at all.

  • It'll come down to hitting in this series. Bears bats need to stay hot.

honestly, i think this series may come down to who fields it better and runs the bases better. i'm not expecting either team to light up the scoreboard, especially on Saturday and Sunday. whoever gives up the fewest outs on the basepaths and gives the other team fewer extra outs, will stand a really good shot at winning this series.

Guilty as charged. The day Smith resigns/retires will be a bright day for me in Baylor baseball. HOWEVER, I do think Van Horn ranks up there with the best in college baseball.

Van Horn is outstanding. Just look at what happened to Nebraska once he left.
