Conference Realignment 2010 and 2011

  • Brian,

I have always been interested to know what our options were had UT, TT, Colorado, OU, and OSU bolted for the Pac-16 while A&M went to the SEC? I know there were rumblings of the Big East before it fell apart and even the Mountain West. Were those legit possibilities? Also, I knew the move to invite Colorado first was to keep Texas from lobbying Baylor in the Pac, was there any chance there? Was that the final or one of the nails in the coffin for the Pac expanding into Texas?

In 2011, it was OU that started the whole thing but it turned out to be a bluff. What did we get out of the bluff? If UT knew all along that they were not going to the Pac and OU knew they were not getting in w/out them what was the point? Had OU and OSU left would Texas had kept the Big 12 together? I know they were looking Big-10/ACC. I am guessing the Big East would have absorbed Baylor/KU/KSU/Mizzou (before the SEC)/ISU or would we have been left at the alter?

This really has nothing to do with the 127 page thread which is why I started a new thread. I was just thinking back on it and all along was told by sources that we had a place to go if the Big 12 faltered. I always thought we would build it back with Texas teams, Kansas, Kansas State, ISU, BYU and whoever else.

What would the college landscape had looked like?

Not an insider but it largely depends on when things happened.

2010- Big East likely takes KU, KSU, ISU and if the SEC doesn't- Mizzou. (8+4=12)
Even if they miss MU I do think we'd struggle to beat out TCU but our ties to KU, KSU, and ISU might have helped.
Likely landing spot is whichever we prefer of the MWC or CUSA. 9 MWC teams (with BSU replacing Utah) leaves 3 spots. Only risk is if BSU uses their influence to get Nevada, Fresno, and Hawaii over us. "He who has the gold makes the rules" and Boise at that point along with BYU had the gold.

2011 before the ACC added Pitt & Syracuse-
Big East had 9 with TCU. KU, KSU, ISU likely join there. We'd be hoping they go past 12.

If not we'd likely be a shoo in for the MWC as long as a suitable #12 was found as they would be at 10.
CUSA would also be a more regional option.

2011 after Pitt & Cuse leave. Big 12's remaining teams add the Big East refugees they desire. WVU, TCU, UL at the top of the list. Add 3-4 more and we are set.

  • So we were a little more screwed than I thought. I figured the Big East would take us.

Largely depends on who else is on the table. The big targets for them were KU and MU. KU probably could have leveraged ISU and KSU easily.

We'd likely be looking at a BU-TCU showdown for spot #12. If they went past 12 both would be in and probably a school like UCF.

Like many things it all depends on when and what is available to the league doing the inviting.

For instance if FSU and Clemson want in it is insanity to offer BYU instead. If we need 12 and no Big5 teams are available BYU becomes option #1 or 2.
