Is this really that prevalant at Baylor?
I'm not doubting you, just curious because I hear this a lot.
I almost never went home during college other than thanksgiving and Christmas and I really don't recall knowing anyone who went home for random weekends. Why would college kids want to go hang out with their parents on the weekend?
Just joined the BBF last night so I'll be getting tickets this year and we'll definitely make it to this game. Already put it on my work calendar.
We are throwing it out there because this is the first time the Briles' era that we SHOULD be better than our first seven opponents, with maybe the exception of Kansas State. That all depends on if they can replace their entire defense and a Heisman finalist QB. The only time we have been expected to have a good/great start was in 2010.
2013- Wofford, Buffalo, LA-Monroe, WVU, @ KSU, vs. ISU, @ KU- none of those teams will be ranked when we play them I doubt with the exception of possibly KSU if they can get it together.
2012- SMU, SHSU, LA-Monroe, @ No. 9 WVU, TCU, @ No. 25 Texas, @ Iowa State (3-4)
2011- No. 14 TCU, SFA, Rice, @ KSU, vs. ISU, @ No. 21 A&M, @ No. 3 OSU (4-3)
2010- SHSU, Buffalo, @ No. 4 TCU, @ Rice, Kansas, Texas Tech, @ Colorado (5-2)
And don't forget that that we have played OU down to the last possessions of the game the last two years and are 1-1 against them. There is something about playing teams close that people remember. And yes, a 5-2 Baylor team is less deserving than a 6-1 or 7-0 team because that means they lost game they probably didn't have any business losing... looking at WVU at home or KU on the road out of our schedule.
And 6-3 in 2011 was after getting smoked by A&M and OSU, winning homecoming against Mizzou, and then squeaking by an awful Kansas team. We weren't playing good at all at the time and we had blown out by anyone decent outside of the TCU game when Griff went nuts. If there is a game with any comparison to the OU game from that season it would have to be the Texas game where people showed up in the rain to watch us stomp Texas.

No. You have to remember our mindset back then.
Every time I got my hopes up as a Baylor fan, they were dashed. Remember when we thought Shawn Bell might get us bowl eligible? I do. And what happened? The bottom friggen fell out.
I am a SOLID Baylor fan. I have never left a game early. In my five years in Waco, I never ONCE missed a game, and my last year in Waco, I traveled to every game except Austin and Iowa St.
But in 2011, I was scared to believe. I was just waiting for the bottom to drop out. -Which made it all the the more enjoyable. It was pure ecstasy because I would have been happy with bowl eligibility, but we got 10 wins, the Alamo Bowl, led the nation in offense (mostly) and oh yeah A HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER!!!!
The Heisman and the "Year of the Bear" went a LONG way to changing the perception of Baylor in the world, but also how Baylor fans see Baylor.
We expect to be in games now. We expect to win games now. For our seniors, bowl games are what is expected. It's all they know. And our FANS think that way, too. Which explains why are recruiting so much better.
THAT is why I don't think we repeat only 40K on a Thursday against OU again.
reread what i wrote, Colt. i clearly stated that i BELIEVE that we can start 6-1 or 7-0, but your comment of, "yes, a 5-2 Baylor team is less deserving" is complete hogwash, and then following it up with the, "well we lost to a&m and OSU in 2011..." nonsense made it worse. that's typical justification of our fans for not going to games, and it's so unlike you to do that b/c i know you go to just about every game, regardless of how we're playing. The UT game is NOT a good comparison mainly because it's UT, and they are always one of the bigger draws. A majority of us, also, expected us to win that game. Maybe not as big as we did, but we were clearly the better team at that point in the season. it's a better comparison for you, because it better supports your stance.
if we're saying that we NEED to be 7-0 or 6-1 to sell out a game against OU, then we've got bigger issues than we think. for what it's worth, i do think that the game will be a sell out if we're 7-0. 6-1...maybe.
i'm not going to argue this point anymore though, b/c it's pointless. i'll just leave it that i do think there are pluses and minuses to this game being on Thursday night. the biggest plus is exposure, and the biggest minus will be attendance.
He's not making excuses. He's giving you reasons.
i remember the mindset. i lived thru the suckage just like most on here did. i wasn't attacking your fanhood, Brooks, and i apologize if that's how it came off.
i'd agree with your stance on fans buying into the program, had our home attendance, post TCU, not been as awful as it was. K-State was terrible, and OSU was pathetic also. I'll give some leeway on KU b/c of the weather, but it was pretty horrible attendance, even before the bad weather came in.
i don't want to turn this into an attendance/fan bashing thread, so i'll leave it alone now (i know i said that in my previous post, but i wanted to address Brooks, in the event he thought i was challenging his being a fan). a lot of you guys think that we'll pack the house at this game, and that's great. I really hope you're right. I just think that it being on a Thursday is going to present some challenges for, and we'll be disappointed. I hope i'm wrong.

I would actually find it helpful when correcting grammar if you could provide the rules so that I can actually improve and recognize the correct uses for future writings.
I seem to have forgotten nearly everything I was learned in English class.
Another one I know I always mess up is "me and ____" vs. "_____ and I."
I don't mind some constructive criticism as long as we can all learn from it.
HA! If you only questioned my fanhood, it'd be better than most things of mine that get questioned (I'm a fabulous dresser).
I didn't think that at all. I just think there's a lot more room for optimism this year. Especially after how well Florence did and the season he had because it gives us solid reason to EXPECT to be good. Briles will reload. Petty will be a beast.
I believe that. I don't hope it. I don't "think" it. I really believe it.
and believing is everything.
I was honestly just joshing around with you. (hence, the "tighten it up" comment)
But since you've challenged me... ;-)
Less vs. fewer
I vs. Me
When in doubt, just pretend you're only talking about you. How would you say it?
My father and I went to the store. ("I went to the store." vs. "Me went to the store.")
That's a picture of my sister and me. ("That's a picture of me." vs. "That's a picture of I")
i honestly do believe we're going to be really good in 2013. i can't wait for the season to start.
I love it! I was being serious.
I'm reading this as two sections as I've divided above.
Your first section- historical performance means very little to nothing in a contest in the present. None of those players or coaches are around anymore. What difference does it make what happened in 2002 to a game in 2013? Historical performance also means nothing in terms of how good a start we have. We have one game that should be considered a toss up and the others we should be favorites in. Hence the expectation of 6-1 or 7-0. The last 5 games are a totally different story. We have 1 loss over the past few seasons after Nov 1. Does that mean we should expect the same this year? No, the schedule is heavily back loaded.
Second section- are they less deserving? Well from your perspective and mine, no. Every game should sell out. Is it realistic? No. Fans show up for a winning team. If we're 7-0 there will be a ton of buzz around this team and it will be a must see game. If we're 5-2 a lot of our fans who are perpetually on the fence on whether or not to drive to Waco won't go through the effort to show up for a Thursday night game. And there truly is a lot of effort needed for this one.
Historical performance absolutely matters when people bring it up as a reason NOT to come to a game. I personally know of a TON of people who didn't go to the OU game b/c "we never beat them" or "they were going to beat the crap out of us, as usual", etc. Hell, Brooks even stated that in one of his posts, and Ashley and I recently discussed it as a reason we even tried to talk ourselves out of going to that game. it's relevent whether you want to believe it or not.
as for 6-1, or better, starts, i only threw that out there to show how incredibly rare it is for us, and therefore somewhat silly to set that as an expectation. i absolutely believe we can start 7-0, but we can be 5-2 going into that game, and still be a pretty darn good team, that's worthy of 40,000+ at that game.
This thread has become a bit of a drag. Our team is going to be REALLY good and there will be plenty of people there regardless of when the game is played and it should be a great atmosphere. I'm pumped.
I wholeheartedly agree, BearMace. I was really just responding to X's question on whether our not the game being moved to Thursday was a good thing, and some folks seem to have taken exception to it.
I'm fully expecting a fun 2013 football season.
I'm not worried about it at all. You can't let it phase you. This is going to be a huge game. And going to be awesome for the people who can be there.
I had this circled as a potential ESPN Gameday game. That's the only bad part.
But me and my boys are now trying to put together a RV College Football Roadtrip weekend.
Dallas-Waco for Baylor OU on Thursday night - Waco - Tuscaloosa for Bama LSU on Saturday. With many great stops and adventures in between.
Agree that losing the potential for our first Gameday visit would be the only downside.
That RV trip would be a helluva time. You know, other than the leg back from Bama
I'll make it.
My parents lived in Hewitt for most of my time at BU and I did summer classes. I bet I went to my parents house no more than 15-20X the entire time I was in school and it was, what, 6 miles down the road. That said, Baylor is a GHOST TOWN on long weekends, holidays and summers so Im going to guess the answer is that it IS that prevalent.
As to the game, I hate Thursday games but I suppose none of us have a choice so it doesnt really matter.
Nobody remembers or cares what the crowd looked like for OU and KSU, but everyone remembers the win.
A lot of campuses are that way. Even in the six months I lived in College Station (literally the roughest months of my entire life, for SO many reasons beyond the obvious ones) the campus was relatively deserted on the weekends. If you didn't have a job, classes/trips, etc, you were gone.
It just feels different when there's a campus of 50K vs. a campus of 14K.
BCS is a lot different than Waco (I used to own a house there) but I think that is due, mostly, to the fact that there are a whole lot more people relating to the University, students, faculty, support staff and, realistically, without Ag there wouldnt be a whole lot else in BCS. You're right though students do seem to flee when given the opportunity.
