Former BU guard Matt Sayman has written a book and is trying to get the word out. Please read this note from Matt:
Dear Family and Friends,
I am so excited to let you in on a project I have been pouring myself into the last six years. I have written a book titled The Leftovers: Basketball, Betrayal, Baylor and Beyond. It’s my story of the departure of Coach Bliss and the rebuilding that we went through afterward. From goal setting in Pennsylvania as a kid to playing for Bliss my first three years at Baylor, the story takes us through that summer, when Coach Drew arrived, and through the end of my senior year.
I started this for three reasons: 1. I wanted it to be a great basketball book, a blueprint for kids who wanted to excel at the game. 2. To show what it’s like surviving in a D1 program. 3. To tell the story of those players who stayed when many didn’t, the ups and downs of that year. Our story is the ultimate underdog story; Rudy but an entire program. It is definitely pro-Baylor as well as showing the amazing things that Coach Drew and his staff have accomplished in such a short time.
My faith was tested during this time, and I found that basketball had actually been my obsession or religion. When it was ripped away, my life fell apart. Even though my teammates and I found some success by giving effort and staying together throughout the season, personally I built poor habits that would stay with me until I turned 30 years old. Only until I fully surrendered and allowed God’s grace to do the work did I actually see change in my life.
It has been an amazing journey. The manuscript is finished, roughly 88,000 words, and is ready for publication. Many of my former teammates have been involved in the process. Coach Drew has agreed to write the foreword to the book. Fran Fraschilla (ESPN analyst), Tony Romo, Coach Kim Mulkey, Avery Johnson and Alan Stein (w/ Stronger Team) have written endorsements for the cover. I have been so blessed to have amazing people support and guide me through this process.
For years, I wanted to tell all of you about the work I was doing, but it wasn’t the time. Now it is!! We are days away from pressing the go button and within 45-60 days I will be holding a copy of The Leftovers. I need your help. Not with buying a copy, although I hope you do and enjoy it, but getting the word out. Currently the Baylor bookstore is on board and is ready to do several signings. My goal is to push our story as far as possible. Please spread the word to your friends and families. Forward this email to everyone you know. Please do not hesitate to share this with any contacts you think could help me. I am willing to travel or speak anywhere. I always wondered where my speech communications degree from Baylor would come in handy. Now I know!
Years ago, I wasn't sure if this book would help anyone but me. It proved to be a cathartic experience as I went back through the hardest period of my life. I believe the positive message about never giving up, believing in the power of “team” and having a strong foundation is one to which many can relate. If nothing else, it’s a great basketball story.
Thanks for taking the time and I hope to hear back from each of you. Remember, no amount of help or advice is too big or too small.
I for one am so excited for this. It's going to be so interesting to hear all the details from around that time that were never talked about publicly.

Tweeted it out for you. With my wife getting published it is a very long process and glad for him getting this opportunity to get out something positive from that time.
I know Matt, a very classy young man and a savvy player- would have been a perfect fit on this year's team.
I am not a book reader by nature, having only read five books in my life, but I will definitely read this one. Matt is one of my all time favorite BU players, and I am happy to support him.
this will be incredible!
Must read for me- thanks for heads up. Get Matt on Bearstruth!
We should do an interview with him as well.
He should definitely get a table in the BU bookstore at Homecoming with the other authors.
He might also considering reaching out to Jerry Hill to see if he can write a blurb about it in the BBF Insider email.
Ask him if he still quotes "Friends," lol

I'll make it.
This will be a good read
Can we get it in the hands of our current team before the Big 12 Tournament?
"...believing in the power of 'team.'”
I sent along the info about Jerry Hill...I can ask him if he'd like to do an interview for bearstruth.

I've reached out to Matt for an interview
Good job Ashley!
I'm looking forward to the book. Should be good reading. Really interested in some of the back story that we've never heard.
