I'm glad you brought this up. The old fashioned is my favorite cocktail. I never know if it is a faux pas to order a "call" whiskey (good small batch bourbon) for a drink like an old fashioned because it will be mixed with bitters, sugar, some fruit, etc. In other words, if you are going to order a whiskey and coke and you suggest a good bourbon like a Blanton's they are going to look at you like you are out of your mind (as they should!). Call me crazy, but if I am going to enjoy a good old fashioned I very much prefer a higher end call (usually Woodford or Makers). I guess in my mind if it is made right you can still very much taste the bourbon...

No, you should feel no shame in requesting a level of Woodford or Makers. Past that level and I personally wouldn't. I'm sure it would be good but a $60+ small batch bourbon doesn't need to be in a cocktail. A $35 bottle of Woodford no problem.
I've got a bottle of Bulleit Rye for mine at home and they come out great. (~$25)
About 10 years ago I purchased a "toothpick holder " with a BU decal from the Spirit Shop- makes for a perfect way to sip Woodford- which I do every chance I get.
I'll make the same at $30/bottle. Buy all she has and bootleg it to me. Please!
