This is Jim Mora Jr's first year as a college coach: finished 9-4 this year.
They are ranked 20th in total offense (Baylor is 1st)
They are ranked 73rd in total defense (Baylor is 119th)
They have a 1700 yard rusher (Johnathon Franklin). Baylor has a 1700 yard receiver (Terrance Williams)
Their kicker is a short range guy (13-15 inside 40). But only 1-5 outside 40. He has also missed 3 extra points this year.
Baylor has won 4 out of their last 5- including 3 in a row. UCLA has won 5 of their last 7 but has dropped two in a row (both to Stanford).
UCLA, which lost to Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game and missed a chance to play in the Rose Bowl, will face Baylor in the Holiday Bowl.
Good stuff Ashley.
I'm working on some stuff for lunch tomorrow. Always fun scouting a new opponent.
They are large and athletic in their front seven on defense. I cannot remember the last time we played a team like this on defense in terms of size.
We are going to have our hands full with UCLA, but these are absolutely the matchups and games we want to play in. Marquee name, quality opponent against another large conference. This is an opportunity to continue to do special things for our University. I love this matchup and I hate Jim Mora Jr.
Hundley is really, really good. He's going to do dirty things to us.
I've seen them play quite a bit and the key is stopping the running game and not letting the QB beat us with his legs. If we jump out to a early lead that would be HUGE!. Franklin runs with great power and deceptive speed.
We will be the underdog so I cannot see us coming out flat.
If our defense keeps improving like it has been I think we're fine. It's interesting because UCLA runs a 3-4. Anybody else in the Big 12 run that kind of defense?
They turn the ball over a ton on offense.
Vs. unranked opponents they averaged 2.85 a game with a high of 6 vs. Cal.
Just put up a quick look at their statistical leaders and they are salty.
Fauria is a future pro at TE.
The front 7 is much like Illinois in 2010. 6'4 275, 6'1 310, 6'4 275 and then OLBs 6'4 235, 6'2 250, etc...
I have watched them a few times this year and I think they remind me of K-State. That QB is like Klein, he will kill you if he gets loose and hits the wide open passes, but if you pressure him he floats passes. Their RB is solid. He is a speed guy with some punch, a lot like Joseph Randle at OSU but shorter.
If I had to take players from our conference to compare them I would say their QB is like Klein, RB is Randall, WR's are about like UT's, O-Line is solid. Their defense a lot like Iowa State, they can be really good, but give up the big plays. With the way we are playing now our run will set up the pass well and we should score 45+. Can we stop Hundley is the question.
They beat Nebraska and USC this year. Will be tough.
They remind me of UDub from last year but with more NFL talent. They didn't play Oregon this year so it's hard to predict how they'll do against a quick tempo offense, but we need to not turn the ball over and run about 80-85 plays. Their D is huge but I'd have to think they'd get tired.
After last night that is not saying much...
70 points in a championship?
Rice hung in the 1st game of the year after UCLA jumped out big.
I think you're overestimating him a bit
They are not like KSU, they are much faster all over the field. The reason KSU was such a good matchup is that they are slow. It's why our defense looked all world.
This is not a good matchup for us. On the plus side, they tend to win with offense as well and defensive numbers are heavily skewed by your opponents. I expect a mostly sloppy game with little defense on either side. *IF* our defense looks decent in this game then look out for next year because it could be special.
Our D looked better against KSU because we do better with running teams than throwing ones and Klein wasn't passing well. Don't kid yourself about KSU. Lockett, Thompson, Hubert, Pease, and Harper can move.
I believe they are the MOST penalized team in college football this year. I didn't go look up the stats but I think they talked about it during the Pac 12 champ game. They lost to Oregon St at home and got hammered at Cal who was awful this year. They Avg. 271 yds passing, 202 rushing and just over 35 pts per game. They are a good offensive team for sure and Hundley is coming into his own but I think we've faced similar them throughout the year versus K-State, OU and Texas so we should be ready.
We're playing so well right now that I think there's no question we'd beat them if we played this Saturday. The question is will we be as good 3 weeks from now as we are today from an execution standpoint. This should be one of the better bowl games out there.
Agree with you, S11. I don't think a "slow" team would be 11-1 and Big 12 champs.
yeah, how we're playing "now" is really irrelevant for this game. i think that the extra practices will be great for our defense, and it will be really helpful in getting guys like KJ Morton healthy, but I can see the time off hurting our offense, at least at the beginning of the game.
UCLA turns the ball over a ton... we have to be opportunistic.
No, the reason KSU was a good matchup was:
They do not spread the field as much as say, Tech or OSU, thus our DBs weren't so easily exposed. Also, our defense has been able to get opponents into 3rd/medium and 3rd/long. Problem is, good passers have converted far too often. Klein isn't a great passer. He can make the routine throws, but doesn't throw it well enough to consistently convert. And, their offense isn't built to do that.
Impressive wins over Nebraska early 36-30, and USC late 38-28. Ugly losses to Cal and Stanford. the other games were close but high scoring. Looks to me like a high scoring game that comes down to turnovers. Very much like Tech or OSU games for us. We have WR's every bit as good as USC, and and OL every bit as good as Stanford. We also have Lache and I'm sure they haven't played a back of his caliber since they didn't face Oregon this season. I think we surprise them with how good our offense is.
