ESPN Sucks

  • Here is the response I got for them not showing the last two minutes of the WVU game.

    Thank you for your e-mail.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us. It’s our goal to serve our fans by offering the game with the most compelling action. In this case, we went to a live look-in at the final seconds of the Iowa State vs. Texas game. We brought fans back to the West Virginia vs. Baylor game at the start of the second half. We understand that not all of our fans will agree with this decision and have shared your comments with our programming department.

    Sincerely,

    Candice

I want to know why you cut in to Iowa State/Texas "bonus coverage" and skipped the last two minutes of the WVU/BU game. I have the Big XII network locally and if I wanted to watch that game, I would. If you are going to cut away, do it in markets not carrying that game. I'd understand if the other game involved two highly ranked teams, but neither are.

Also someone should tell your commentators to come up with new fun facts. I've heard the Rico Gathers story every single game I've watched.

  • What's really ridiculous is that all they had to do was split screen it.

  • She would have been more truthful had she said, "We understand that not all of our fans will agree with this decision and we don't care."

Wasn't it the last two minutes of the 1st half, not the last two minutes of the game?

I understand people being upset, but I didn't think it was a huge deal... They do it all the time with games not just that one.

  • Yeah it was a typo, but they clearly understood what I was saying. They could have at a minimum but the score in the corner or did a split screen. They could have showed or told us what happened in that last two minutes. But nothing. I was surprised they didn't show more of the whorns OT

    jdigdiggity

  • honestly, the UT vs. Iowa State game had a pretty exciting end to it... they do this stuff all the time. I would have been pissed if it was the end of the game and it was close, but it was the first half.

AND in that final 2 minutes that we missed, exactly 1 basket was made from both teams combined. It's not like our game was must see tv.

I hear what you are saying but you guys are missing the OP's point.

What if we were playing Kansas and we were down by a bucket with 1:19 left in the half? That is a potential major momentum changer. Now, would they have done that to Kansas? Likely not, but we don't know.

If they were smart they would have done a split screen until halftime of the BU vs. WVU game. The last 11.7 seconds of the Texas game took over 5 minutes because of four timeouts and five fouls.

  • Split screen seems to be a foreign concept to networks. It's the easiest solution to event cut ins/look ins. For me it all dates back to that 1994 nba finals game vs OJ chase. Split screen? Nah, we just want you to watch a guy driving around for a hour.

Trust me, it was freaking annoying as all get out.

But there's a pecking order, and we are at the bottom.

    The X Factor898

  • I didn't mind as much because I just started watching the game on my iPhone/Watch ESPN app. I do wonder if they would have cut away from Texas/ISU if Baylor and WVU had been in the same situation. I somehow doubt it.

By the way, ESPN still sucks and I cannot wait for Fox Sports 1 & 2 to launch this fall. Not only will those networks improve the coverage of the Big 12, but they will force ESPN's hand on all sports coverage.

I am very disappointed in your programming decision to break away from the Baylor/WVU game to show the end of the UT/ISU game.

If I wanted to watch the UT/ISU game, that's what I would have been watching. I missed the last couple minutes of the first half of the Baylor game because of this decision.

Please think twice in the future about breaking away from the scheduled game for so long.

  • I think this is a ridiculous thing to even write them about. I'm shocked there was even a response.

They were showing a great final few minutes of a game. Our game was boring and wasn't even to halftime. If they cut away from the final minutes of ours to go to the final minutes of another game, I'd be pissed. Instead, I was actually interested in watching that game.

    Much ado about nothing.

I think you'd have a point had the UT/ISU game not been on in most Texas markets. If they had wanted to cut in in South Dakota nobody would care, but we had both games here and they took our game away to have the UT game on on two channels.

Split screen or p.i.p. would have been the best option if the couldn't regionalize the cut in

Exactly the same email that I received from 2 separate ESPN people.
It doesn't matter what they wanted to do. It does matter that I wanted to watch the game they listed, not another game. It matters not that it was only 2 minutes and the other game was close or had any significance to anyone else.

    JoeBear79

  • huh? ESPN does suck in some areas, but this is not a big deal. I was watching UT game on my laptop anyway. It was a much better game.

ESPN for the most part does the best job in the industry with live content. Now sportscenter reruns? I quit watching that years ago.

  • For the record, ESPN cut away from Indiana (#1 team in the country) yesterday to show the end of the OU/OSU game.

We are not being singled out, and I, for one, was glad to see the OU/OSU game.

Exactly. I don't know why our fans think "it's because of Texas" and "ESPN hates us". wah wah wah.

  • My point is that had it NOT been Texas that noone would have yelped about it. Perhaps not.

    Limnos

  • Never said it was because it was UT, but that they cut away for so long. There was actually very little action and a lot of talking heads when they cut away. I'd much rather they just cut away and replay the game winning shot right after it happens and then get back to the game I tuned in to watch.
