End of an era

  • I can't believe how fast time moves. it seems like it wasnt that long ago that RG3 was just stepping in to fill in for Kirby Freeman vs Wake. In honor of RG3's fantastic career, I offer up my 5 personal favorite RG3 moments at Baylor. Feel free to add your own:

    1. Heisman speech - not even close, even though it was off the field. I ran into a UT law buddy yesterday who is also an aggy, and we talked football. We of course got to RG3, and he went on and on about his speech and what a class kid he is. Above all the highlights, that is what a non-Baylor person remembered the most. I believe that is the greatest moment in Baylor sports history.

    2. OU game 2011 - specifically the winning TD pass. To me this is his greatest play at Baylor and the "Heisman moment." Walloping Texas a week later secured it, but before OU RG3 had essentially fallen out of the race, and after that game he was back at the top of the list.

    3. "The move" vs Wake in RG3's first collegiate game. You know the play....his step back on the sideline that caused the Wake defender to fly by him. That move let everyone know we had something we had not seen before at QB in Waco.

    4. Washington State game RG3's first season. He ran for over 200 yards and it was simply one of the most amazing performances I have seen from a college football player.

    5. Texas game 2011 - what a way to close out a career at home. I was telling everyone around me how Texas had not given up a TD pass over 20 yards all year as the game started, so RG3 decided to drop a bomb right away. 48-24 and a Heisman clincher. and that was #5 on the list.

Good luck in the NFL RG3 and thanks for all you have done for Baylor football and Baylor University!

  • I was at that Wash St game in 2008 that got moved to Friday night because of a hurricane. There were generously 20,000 fans there that night.

I think as the RGIII Legend has grown, 100,000 have claimed to be there.

    It was an amazing performance.

  • Great list Bono. I've been watching games since the 60's, and this is my proudest moment as a Baylor fan.

The class this guy has conducted himself with has really set him apart from our other stars. This guy will forever be in the public eye I predict.

  • I sat by him in a political science class for a semester and he knew me by first and last name. Shook my hand anytime he saw me in public. Never once acted like he didn't know me. He probably would not remember me now, but to think that the man he was then is the same man he is now is absolutely unfathomable to comprehend. That is what I will remember most about him.

  • Also, a point of order. Kirby Freeman started against Wake. RGIII started the following week against Northwestern St.

  • That is a nice list Bono, but I think I would replace the Washington State game with this year's TCU game. Griff was incredible that game against a Washington State teeam that was legendarily bad that year.

Griffin went off in the TCU game with all the deep balls for TDs and then the 3rd down catch on the final drive that kept it alive for Stork's FG. With that game being televised nationally, it caught everyone's attention and was probably his first Heisman moment and earned him a trip to College Gameday the next day.

  • His 2008 game against A&M would be toward the top of my list.

  • i'd maybe replace the UT game from this year w/ his 50 yarder against KU. that play turned our season around, and w/out the finish we had, he doesn't win the Heisman.

I was actually at that game. I hitched a ride w/ a bfans poster down from Dallas since my truck was in use by my family that weekend.

Everyone has a series of plays that are frozen in their memory . . . Bell to Zeigler in 04, Mosely and his sundial 40 time breaking away from A&M for the sure TD in '05 only to be caught, Ziegler dropping the 20 yard dig in '06 against A&M that would have put us in scoring position ( remember this because it was a 2nd down and Shawn Bell got injured on the next play ).

From his freshman year, I remember "the move" against Wake, and the two point conversion at the end of the 2nd quarter in Lubbock at the end of the season. But that WSU game stands out above all . . . the rushing wasn't what got me, it was him making two throws on the move rolling to his right. I remember watching him put the ball 50 yards down the field, on a dime, across the hash and thinking, "oh my God, he's not just an athlete, he can throw".

  • I truly am blessed that I was able to experience the full rebuild from Guymo's last year (my freshman year at BU) to this past year (first season out of college working in waco). Seasons like this create life long fans and do so much for the school as a whole.

good point and I knew that just stated it wrong - in his first college game ever. his first start was indeed a week later.

  • I only picked 5 but there are many more, and some good ones pointed out already that I had forgotten.

The TD pass he had vs Iowa State (I think) 3 or 4 years ago in waco...ran around to his left, then kind of all around some, then back to his right, then hit someone in the corner of the end zone for a TD (baker?)

I am a little fuzzy on the details, but you know which play I am referencing. one of his early sportscenter top 10 plays I believe.

  • The pass he made to Kendall Wright against K State last year where Wright caught it in the back of the end zone in stride was pretty sick.

  • It just occurred to me that we will be doing this for the rest of our lives.

Me to my daughter when she starts at Baylor 18 years from now: "well, back when you were just a baby/not even born yet Baylor had an amazing QB named "RG3" who made the most amazing plays I have ever seen..."

  • I actually have to add another to my list since someone mentioned HS. this is one i remembered driving back from SA as I passed through Round Rock, but forgot when making my list earlier today.

Cove played in the state title game RG3's senior year. It was at RRISD stadium and my brother and I drove down from Dallas to check out this kid that we heard was an incredible athlete and about to enroll at BU a semester early.

It was freezing cold that night, RG3 didnt do a ton passing the ball, and had a few nice runs here and there. I think Cove lost but am not even positive about that.

while we were certainly excited after watching him in person, we never had a clue he would win the Heisman one day. I am really glad we went and can say we saw him all the way back then, even if the game that night was unspectacular.

Need to remember the greatness of RG3 for a while...probably through the draft. Random youtube moments here and there...reminiscing and the like.

Then...I will probably be the biggest florence sunshine pumper out there. SGHS!

The RG3 era is over - what a run it was.
