Fmr Football Player, Andrew Heard fighting cancer

  • Andrew Heard is a former Baylor football player, he played under Guy Morriss, when I was at Baylor for undergrad.

I ended up serving with Andrew on the staff at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas for a few years. He was the youth pastor and I am the missions pastor. Andrew has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time in his life, and he has not been given a great report. The doctors recently, told him he may only have 12 weeks left of life, so he'll die before his 31st birthday. Due to his second fight with cancer, he has reached his maximum that his insurance will pay. He has setup a fundraiser to help cover the costs of the debt owed, $25k-$30. He has a wife, Bailey a former Baylor cheerleader and a young daughter, Ellie.

Thanks for your time and for praying for the Heard family.

  • Glad you put this up here. I was pretty frustrated about the game last night and received the 12 weeks news a few minutes later. Helped put things in perspective quickly.

  • sorry to hear this- I know there have been discussions on other boards about Scott Huckabay's battle also. Thanks for making us aware and how we can help.

  • Incredibly sobering. My wife lived directly across the hall from Bailey in Collins between 2003-2004. I got to know her a little bit between that and the business school -- I just hate this for them.

  • Thanks for posting. Andrew's sister married one of my best friends at BU. So sad to hear. Glad there is a way to help show support for them at this time.

  • Prayers to them.

Park Cities Baptist is a great church that gave our church in Galveston 500K after Hurricane Ike destroyed the electrical system as well as set up a trailer in the lot for people to shower or wash their clothes since we didn't have water.

  • So sorry to hear this. I'm currently sitting in an ICU waiting room as my father in law just had major brain surgery for the 3rd time in the last 8 months fighting some form of cancer they cannot diagnose. It definitely does put things in perspective. I'll keep Andrew and family in my prayers.

  • Brandon - thanks for posting this. I've been praying for Andrew and Bailey, who is one of my favorite former students and someone who I would want my daughters to look up to. I know people who went to Baylor/Truett with Andrew who speak highly of him, as well.

I appreciate you passing on the link so that fellow Bears can not only pray, but also hopefully support these alums. I'm thankful for such a great University and its people who support one another in joys and in trials!

    Sic 'em.

  • I know Smoaky also talked about Andrew and Bailey on his show on Thursday. I know they are grateful for your support and help. I've been trying to get the Baylor athletic department to share the link on twitter, but haven't had success yet.

Scott Huckabay? As in, Little Abner from Scoop?

I have not heard about this. Can anyone share?

My $0.02: Email Kevin Kyle (or someone else) in the BBF office. Ask him to plug it in the daily email that the BBF sends out. Who knows, they might include it. Just a thought

yes- I'm copying and pasting the info from bearscoop:

    From Clavine:

Most of you remember him, great poster on this site with terrific insights into our football program. His name is Scott Huckabay and he was a fraternity brother of mine and a few others that are fellow Scoopers. He was diagnosed a few months ago with pancreatic cancer and was given about six months to live. He has experienced complications recently and appears to have days/weeks left. Very, very sad.

Scott was an SAE with me in the graduation class of '88, I graduated in '89 enjoying five full years. He was a all world RB at Plano HS back in their glory years and was highly recruited and played for Teaff. Scott is a terrific guy and is currently in a hospital in Plano. He is a Christian and appears to be at peace with what he is facing.

Thought some of you might want to know.

  • For those who don't remember or are too lazy to look it up, Andrew was the player that walked on to our team after he graduated and played football at Texas Tech. I believe he went to Truett while playing for us for one year.

When he and I served at PCBC together, it was fun to hear him talk about Leach and GuyMo.

Thanks to all your efforts we have passed the 53% mark on the fundraising.

So sad. Parents should never have to bury their kids.

  • Here is an update on Andrew's condition:

Last week we received a small ray of hope from one of our doctors. We met with a neurosurgeon and she told us that the tumor in Andrew’s brain was actually one centimeter instead of three centimeters and that the doctors weren’t sure the other 3 spots in his brain were tumors. One radiologist thought Andrew had cancer in the fluid of his spine, but the neurosurgeon told us this defiantly wasn’t the case (whew). Andrew ended up being a candidate for gamma knife surgery (it’s very star treky) basically 200 beams of radiation shoot into the tumor in his brain (it is a one time treatment). The other option was brain surgery, which is extremely invasive and could have some pretty bad long term affects. We were really excited to hear that he was a candidate for the gamma knife! He should undergo the surgery in a couple of weeks. We have to meet with another neurosurgeon and then we will get the green light to set up the surgery.
