    For the final spring break of his college life, Georgia's Aaron Murray toyed with the idea of going with friends to Cancun or Key West. Instead, Murray spent his vacation time this past week in Oklahoma working, morning and afternoon sessions with private QB coach George Whitfield. Baylor's Bryce Petty joined in too as both quarterbacks hope their extra QB tutoring will help lead to titles.

    Have any of you guys seen him throw a fade yet in practice? Similar to the one that Nick threw Goodley vr ucla?

    With an arm as strong as Petty's when he learns to throw that, well, he'll be soooo dangerous imo then ..... gonna be hard for him to learn to take a little off his passes when he's supposed to but he will

    He's making all the throws, including the fade.

  • Not necessarily expecting a top 3 national offense, but I really think folks (including me) are going to very impressed with our offense this year. And I think the schedule is very favorable for us to. To play Aug. 31 - Wofford, Sept. 7 - Buffalo, then an off week, then Sept. 21 - ULM, then another off week, then Oct. 5 - West Virginia, then Oct. 12 - at Kansas State, Oct. 19 - Iowa State at Homecoming, and then Oct. 26 at Kansas means we'll have 7 games that we will probably be favored in (we'll see about KState) plus 2 off weeks before we play OU.

    Petty and the rest of the offense will have a ton of time to gel before the last 5 games of OU, Tech, OSU, TCU, and Texas.

    I'm really starting to get excited about next season... if our defense will continue to improve.

  • If he can harness his great power, he will be great. My concern early on was that, like Griffin in his RS-Sophomore season, it may take some time for him to get ahold of his touch 20-40 yards downfield. In Robert's case he was having to adjust to a rehabbed knee, Petty is just now getting his feet wet with the first team. Petty has shown much better touch the last 2 practices and has looked lethal in nearly every phase. If he continues to put in the work, he has a real chance at being special both at Baylor and in the NFL. He has size that Baylor has never had in recent memory at QB, and a better arm than Robert.

    Have to disagree DBYRD..no offense, even the players don't agree with you..talked to a good friend who is one of our best IR's and he said the one thing Bryce still needs to get more work on is his touch on his long balls as he said "hasn't connected with Bryce on one long ball yet in scrimmage".

    To say he has 'looked lethal' is a huge over statement, don't get me wrong I have liked what I have seen from Bryce in practice so far, but to say he is "lethal" so far is just wrong. Manageable? Yes..but not lethal (at least not yet biggrin).

  • Agree to disagree. I see you out there every practice so I know you are getting the same looks that I do. Perhaps what I consider lethal is different from what you do. Regardless, I have seen the IR you speak of get a 30-35 yard pass in stride and take it home a few practices ago. That's the only one he has gotten but I have seen 2-3 more to other receivers the last few practices as well. On another note, there have been quite a few drops and break ups that weren't necessarily Petty's fault. If you can hit every short to mid throw and 1/3 deep, I consider you lethal. He has done that the last 2 practices. I only expect him to get better. We are in good hands.

This offense is QB friendly so if he can't make it happen with the skill guys and Olinemen we have returning it'll be because he can't handle live bullets.

    None of this matters until the real bullets start flying. Nowadays coaches don't let live bullets fly at them in practice. He'll have a chance early in the season next year to put up great stats w/ that schedule but we'll see if he's where he needs to be once we get to conference. I feel good about him in this offense, but I look forward to seeing him in September.

    i completely agree that there are a ton of "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" kids out there, but here's my objective view on the Petty situation.

    i won't make any declarations on how good or bad he'll be this season, but the three things that give me a lot of encouragement are these.

    1.) all the physical tools you can ask for
    2.) great mindset from having to deal w/ dissapointment of not winning job last year, sucking that up, and playing his role on the team
    3.) his dedication to go the extra mile to get better at the position (this was his 2nd visit with Whitfield) even after he's been named the starter

    i certainly hope those three things translate into good play on the field, but i definitely think that it's fair to say that all three of them are a really good place to start.

    Agree completely. The most important parts of QB play (assuming bare minimums of physical ability are there) aren't measurables. It's decision making, accuracy, and intangibles- the stuff that made Tom Brady a future Hall of Fame QB despite a mediocre arm and a 5.2 forty. The only clear indicator we will have on that is how he performs in game situations and we haven't seen it yet.

    I just can't agree to disagree on this. He has the measurables covered as we discussed. But when it came full speed scrimmage he looked lost out there. Only a few first downs and a few dropped picks. Yes-he is going to be a good Baylor quarterback I just can't see how you're already talking NFL with this kid if your watching these practices. Hopefully his decision making improves throughout spring and the rest of the off season. Not trying to start an argument, or say that Bryce is bad or be Mr. Negative, I just don't see him as lethal-right now. But possibly in the future. Depends on decision making, not his mesurables.

  • Assuming an adequate arm, including the release, judgment and decision making are the key elements to quarterbacking. Add in quick feet and the success ratio climbs, and then every additional component after that adds to the formula. But judgment and decision making for QBs and Point Guards separate out the really successful ones from the ones who have flash and dash but are subject to crash. And, I might add, it is more than intelligence and more than sound fundamentals. The best practice field quarterback I have ever seen was Hayden Fry, but he played behind two All Conference players, the latter of whom was an All American, Adrian Burk and Larry Isbell, because he just could not replicate on game day what he could the other five days of the week.

    His intelligence and knowledge of the game was equal to or superior to both, and his fundamentals were flawless -- that made him an outstanding coach, but except for a game to open his senior year, never a starting quarterback.

    I have high hopes for Petty, and I think that he will deliver on those expectations. But if it is a judgment matter that is at issue, that will have to be addressed by the time conference time rolls around. Those behind him have far less time in the system and are impossibly young, but judgment under the stress of competition does not necessarily militate against their use should it come to that. I don't think that it will.

    gramps... I know it was the obvious but based on the convo. Its not good to put serious expectations on this Kid. He already has to follow Griff and Florence.. and he's played (in total) all of maybe 1 game in his career. Its just natural that his processing speed will be a little slower than we're used to..he very seldom has had to be "The Man" while facing guys who specifically want to get him out of the game...and we all know.. that is the objective of every defensive player. So while I know it was the obvious.. the good news is he gets a few "Soft Games" which should bring confidence and then... the "Bullets" will fly and we'll see what we really have.
