Just A Thought

  • But We are pretty stacked at D-end with McCalister, Lloyd, Oakman, Palmer, KJ Smith and Phillips coming in and if Chatman isn't a D-end this offseason id be shocked.

But why not move Magee to defensive tackle? He'snot and elite athlete at defensive end ive been watching game tape an his get off isn't great not compared to Mccalister and Plamer and im pretty sure Oakmans is better also ( I could be wrong) but at d-end I dont see him ever being and elite level rusher.

But at our already thin defensive tackle spot if he gains weight I can see him being one of the most athletic tackles in America. Am I wrong to think like this??

I always believed get the best 11 on the field if he moves to tackle then I believe our defensive team speed takes another step and it allowd Palmer, Oakman more snaps in the future with KJ Smith, Phillips and Chatman

  • makes a lot of sense to me. His future is probably at DT in the NFL or at least be versatile enough to be a hybrid type guy.

  • I believe when he was recruited he was projected long term to be a DT.

  • i like the thought. at an absolute minimum, get him as many snaps as you can, at DT, in passing situations. Magee's a big, strong dude, who should be able to set the edge on running plays, but you're right that he probably lacks the athleticism to be a big-time pass rusher, especially when projecting to the next level. I can see Magee as a much bigger Gary Mason Jr on the inside, and just look at the impact Mason made, down the stretch, last season.

  • more and more DTs play and excel at about 285 in college. Magee could carry that really well IMO.

    Yes. Projected.

I think he did play a little better every game. Seemed timid at times. I would like to see a better burst at the start. He has the speed and quickness he just needs to use it. More playing time early next year will help.

He's not a Future NFL guy at D-end IMHO. But at defensive tackle he is a top prospect in the future no doubt.

An to be honest im not sure If Palmer doesn't out-right win the job this spring we are talking about a kid that's 6'2 6'3 250+ after this offseason that will run a sub 4.6 laser timed 40. In this league that type of guy must play.

  • He's either a 3-4 DE in the NFL or a 4-3 DT in the NFL, also with him coming up from a 3A school there is a massive transition in speed of game and physicality on the line to adjust to... I think with a full off season with Kaz and spring practice he has a chance to either become a legit threat off the edge next season if he develops a quicker first step or he will pack on some weight and become one hell of an athletic DT... Either way it's a win win for the defense.

  • I think a huge key to our defense being successful next year is the maturation of Masumbuko, Valdez, and Blackshear. If they can contribute, we'll have a really nice three man rotation (which is crucial) at DT.

i can't remember the last time we had this many defensive lineman that i was excited about seeing play. Magee, Oakman, Palmer, and Banks jump to the front of my mind. throw in McCallister and Lloyd with how they improved late last season, and even Blackshear and Clemons-Valdez because they got light-years better from the season's start to end. Osei's a wild-card, because he's so raw, but if he picks up the game, then he could be a HUGE impact guy in the middle. he'll be a grown man playing against kids...literally!

we're normally just trying to think of enough names to fill a d-line two-deep, but now we've got bodies, and quite a few guys that actually have you excited about the potential of our front 4. it's mostly unproven, but there's definitely the ability there to give some confidence.

  • I wouldn't expect much from Osei next year. Seems like more of a long term project.

that's why i said he's a wildcard. i'm really not expecting much from him, but you can't rule out the possibility that he picks up on the nuances that go with playing DT. if that happens, then he can't help but be a big contributor. his physical maturity, alone, gives him an enormous advantage over anyone he'll be playing against.

Yes the transition is a big part. He has the the tools physically. very well said Dancing.

  • How much does Banks weigh now? It seems like he'll be a DT to me.

He's atleast 270 now should be 280-285 by August. I see him as having a say so in the defensive tackle rotation.

He said he was 285 on Facebook the other day. Not fat at all.

  • I like Magee at DT, too. I know this - the people I knew in McKinney who personally watched Palmer play in high school believe he is destined to play on Sundays. They say his athleticism is freakish. Blackshear ended the season as a Big 12 DT. He will only get better. Hopefully we can a JUCO DT in here and Valdez will reach his potential.
