Leach no longer welcome at DeSoto.

Recruiting can be a cutthroat business.
Claude Mathis, DeSoto’s head coach since 2008 and a former star running back at Southwest Texas State, understands that; he’s seen promises from college coaches go unfulfilled during his tenure.
But what happened to senior defensive back Myron Turner, Mathis said, is just unforgivable.
Turner, a 6-0, 175-pound safety for the 5A Division I semifinalists, took his official visit to Washington State last weekend. He’d been committed to Mike Leach since October, and – according to Mathis – had since spurned all other suitors.
Nevertheless, Mathis got a call on Monday that Washington State was no longer going to honor its offer, deciding to go with a bigger safety. Mathis thought the new offer was to a junior college prospect that could start right away. That might not be the case; Amarillo Palo Duro safety Montrel Meander (6-3, 185) received an offer from Washington State and committed last weekend.
“You just don’t do a kid like that,” Mathis said. “Washington State isn’t welcome at DeSoto any longer.”
Mathis said he understood that pulling offers happens, but that switch shouldn’t occur two weeks away from National Signing Day (Feb. 6), especially when Turner had been steadfast in his commitment and so few other FBS options were still on the table. What made Mathis even more unhappy was that Leach took a visit to DeSoto last week, sitting in Mathis’ office and not once mentioning that Turner’s offer might be at risk.
“He didn’t say a thing,” Mathis said.
Mathis said he has been hitting the phones over the past few days, trying to find a spot for Turner, who’s now without a FBS offer.
“He’s really hurt right now,” Mathis said of Turner.

  • I hate this for these kids. I think there are right and wrong ways to do it. If you let them know early and then line them up with another school I think that can be seen as not being ethical, but at least you did not leave the kid to rot. I am glad we honored Harris' offer after he blew out his knee. Stuff like that goes a long way with coaches.

  • As a dad of a future scholarship football player I would absolutely go nuts if this happened to my son. We are down to the final days before signing day. I hope this kid finds a place to play and I wish him the best.

  • I rememeber Dave Roberts did it to a guy that went on and played 7-8 years in the NFL.

  • Montrel Meander is a good player. I am shocked that his main offers were like Wazzou, New Mexico. I think if he was in Houston he was be a top 100 guy as a WR or S

  • not to smart to piss off one of the top teams in the nation, especially in an area where leach could get a pipeline going with his past success in the state.

DJ Green from Mesquite Horn. But like CWS said we called and told him that in October 2012 so he still had plenty of time to find a good landing spot.

Did Art set him up with any recruiters from other schools? Maybe Houston?

  • i'm not saying what Wazzou did is right, but do you think this coach would be as pissed at this player, had UT come in at the last minute, and he left Wazzou high and dry because he flipped to the horns? I sure don't.

kids do this to schools all the time, but whenever a school does it to a kid they get absolutely crucified in the court of public opinion.

  • There are plenty of FBS schools in Texas that I'm sure could make room for him and be happy to have him. Texas State, UTSA, UTEP, UH, etc. The coach is a Texas State alum. Probably a better situation than going 3000 miles away anyway.

^^^ darn right, and it seems "cool" to bash Leach these days, too. how often do we "bash" the kids that decommit at last moments too because they think they've found greener pastures elsewhere? Well, sounds like the school just found "greener pastures" here imo. Leach finds greener pastures and is crucified publicly(was this actually run in DMN?). well, perhaps DMN needs to write of how kids decommit at last second leaving schools high and dry to replce them too? Isn't turn about fair play? If a kid can look out for their future why is it so wrong for a school too? I know that in todays world kids are priceless gold tho but in real world that they are being prepared for in their early yrs this happens regularly!

Ok, blackball and crucify me now but perhaps in the long run this kid toughens and is better prepared for the long workaday world in his future because of this too?

I think there is a diference between a kid who shuts down his recruitment and one who is still taking visits or listening to other coaches on in-homes.

Speaking of Green, has he landed anywhere yet?

you're right that there is a difference, but who's to say his interest wouldn't have been piqued had a school like UT, OU, LSU, etc. come in and offered him a scholarship over the past few days. it happens all the time, and we've seen it happen plenty. as i stated in my post, i don't think that what WSU did is "right", and i'm sure there were better ways to handle it, but the only people who get all up-in-arms about a player bailing, especially at the last minute, are the fans of the school that got left holding the bag. Decommits and last minute switches are just written off as, "that's just how recruiting go", but schools pulling offers is viewed as unethical and bad form.

honestly,i feel bad for the kid, and he's got a right to be upset. i just think the door swings both ways in this, and kids flipping to other schools seems to happen way more often than schools pulling offers, even moreso when we're talking about it happening at the last minute.
