Old Fight and TGOBL vocal versions coming soon

  • All,

Just wanted to pass this along to this board. Nothing really secretive, but a project that has been about two years in the making.

Soon we'll have men's choir versions of Old Fight and That Good Old Baylor Line for everyone to enjoy. It's been difficult to schedule the recording with so many schedules to juggle, concert hall reservation, time for the guys to make it, and getting the right setup that would work for the best quality with what we had.

Tonight we got it done. The guys sounded great. They were not asked to give a choral performance of these songs. Rather we asked them to sing it with power and enthusiasm like a fan in a stadium.

The purpose of this is to help fans understand and learn how the songs should be sung. I kept seeing people clapping during Old Fight and only doing the "Go Bears!" and the spell outs (sometimes you'd hear a bit of "you bruins bold"), and ignoring the rest of the song. So we set off on this project to get quality recording of these songs.

We hope this will help with further infusing our fanbase with the passion and understanding needed to help take our programs further. Lots of work to be done overall, but we hope this will contribute positively even if in only a small way.

Sorry I can't post them yet. We're combing over the takes and picking the two we want to release.

Expect them to be posted to the Baylor Nation Fan Zone page (will be reactivated around Welcome Week) and maybe Baylor Proud and Facebook. I'd like to get them to Student Life to incorporate into Line Camps and Orientation. We'll see.

This is probably more of a big deal to me because of how long I've been trying to coordinate this with the men's choir.

    Still, I had to share.

  • When I was in school, "Mighty Bears" was the main fight song and it was the one with the BAYLOR spell out. Old Fite had a chant instead of the spell out that went.
"Fight Fight Baylor U, we're for you - Go Bears!
Fight Fight Baylor U we'll win through - Yea Team!
Get in the fight then with all your might you Bruins Bold
We'll win all our victories for the Green and Gold."

The second song is a Fight Song written by Fred Waring who was a famous band leader of the '40s His band was Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.

This is the problem as far as our Fight Song is concerned. "Old Fite" has been BU's fight song since 1947, yet everyone relates with some other "main fight song" from when they were in school.

I actually didn't know the words to "Old Fite" until a couple of years ago. it's a crying shame that Baylor doesn't do more to familiarize their students with stuff like this.

Well done, gramps (and anyone else involved in this project)!

  • Ryan,
I wasn't suggesting we go back to those old songs but I think the history is interesting. The reason that Mighty Bears was the primary fight song was that Donald I Moore was the director of the Golden Wave and he wrote the song. There was another fight song along the way called Bears Fight '72 which was very much a knock off of Texas Fight. As far as I know there were no words to that song.

Sorry Old300, i wasn't suggesting that was where you were going with your post. i was more referring to how Baylor has completely missed the boat on laying down the foundation for simple football traditions like knowing the fight song and alma mater. it was as if neither one of them existed when i was a young pup, at Baylor. I wouldn't have known the words to "That Good Ol' Baylor Line" while i was in school had it not been for my mom being such a big Baylor fan.

hate them as we all do, agsy definitely got it right in instilling pride in their song and making the singing of it an event in and of itself. it may sound stupid now, singing about UT when they're no longer playing each other, but i wish our enthusiasm and knowledge of our song(s) came even remotely close to that of Southeastern a&m.

  • Hazing sometimes has its uses. My freshman year the sophomores would come into the cafeteria and have freshmen stand in their chairs and sing the Line. Can't remember what the punishment was if you didn't know it. Probably just being humiliated. Unfortunatly the sadists and perverts ruined what could be a lot of fun if it was done in a sense of comraderie.
