Recruiting from a National perspective

  • Man I just read a few articles and saw this stat on the number of elite players who are going to conferences other than the Big 12. Our conference as a whole really needs to pick it up. And it starts with talent.

    This is pretty shocking.

    ESPN 150 commitments by conference

    1. SEC: 48
    2. Big Ten: 24
    3. Pac-12: 18
    4. ACC: 16
    5. Independents: 9
    6. Big 12: 9
    7. Big East: 2

    ESPN 300 commitments by conference

    1. SEC: 94
    2. Big Ten: 44
    3. Pac-12: 40
    4. ACC: 30
    5. Big 12: 26
    6. Independents: 12
    7. Big East: 7

  • Certainly an alarming trend, however, I also read today that 42% of the Rivals National top 100 from 06-09 were busts. Big 12 also had 5 1st Rd NFL draft choices last year, while SEC had about half...

    Definitely not a good trend, but ESPN might have the worst ranking system of all time... I don't know of anyone that takes them seriously, they are kinda like the Bleacher Report of recruiting services

  • I get the fact that recruiting rankings are skewed. But even if you looked at 247's or Rivals, I'm sure the trend is still there. Being behind the SEC is one thing. Being behind everyone but the Big East is crazy to me.

    Especially since we have the state of Texas.

    2014 is a big year.

  • With the "..." I figured he meant half the first round picks. Everything cycles. Not to mention we have 4 fewer schools than the SEC and 2 less than the PAC and B1G. UT and TCU had very few seniors. It's not as cut and dry as that makes it seem. Throw in the ESPN rankings are screwy to begin with. The Big 12 will be fine.

    it's definitely not good, but you've also got to look at the makeup of each conference. the Big 12 has no fewer than 2 less teams than the other "Power" conferences, and probably half of the "flagship" type schools of each as well. we've got UT and OU (can't count KU b/c they just don't care about football...KSU doesn't recruit like ANYONE else, so can't put them in here), the SEC, has Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, agsy, and even S. Carolina. the Pac 12 has UCLA, USC, Arizona, and Oregon, the Big 10 has Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin, Penn St (yeah, even post Sandusky scandal), and Nebraska, and the ACC even has FSU, UNC, Maryland, Va Tech, and even UVa.

    the "big boys" are where the vast majority of these big-time recruits are going, and we just don't have the numbers that the other conferences do.

    this also shows the greatest vulnerability of our conference, in my opinion.

  • Stunning stat. I've always been of the "popcorn" school of recruiting, namely that some pop, some never pop and others burn up. But if on average you have that much greater quality of players then the random development and failure of these kids will still occur at a much higher level in the SEC.

    There probably is some expectation bias here b/c of the # of SEC followers in either 247 or rivals and because of their recent success, but it cannot be enough to account for the huge lead that the SEC has in ESPN top 300 guys. While the ESPN ratings might be suspect, it is unlikely that an analysis of Rivals would be any different. .

    Part of it is certainly due to the fact that this is a down year for recruits in Texas as compared to other footballer producing states, but that cannot be the entire reason for the issue. Given the losses of OU and KSU at the top (going away) and these results, you can't deny that the conference is at a low point right now.

    The benefit to the Bears is that it is anyone's conference championship to take, including us. .

    Like Ryan pointed out, the 2013 recruiting rankings also should factor in...

    SEC=14 schools
    B1G=12 schools
    Pac 12= 12 schools
    ACC= 12 schools
    Indy= Notre Dame
    Big 12= 10 schools

    SEC is the top dog with schools with "names" and that's what the top 150 are mostly looking for, the B1G and Pac 12 also have several "big name" programs, the ACC has 5 more 150 recruits than the Big 12 with 2 more schools so it's about even or give them a +1 on the Big 12. Notre Dame is riding high from their run at the National Championship.

    Big 12 has UT and OU as the "name" schools in the conference, just another reason why adding a FSU and Clemson would do wonder for the perception of the conference.

  • That's pretty interesting. I wonder what it was like over the last 5 years. The big 12 is just behind the SEC for best conf but we don't get highly ranked recruits.

    So either the big 12 really is slipping and when these recruits are seniors we are looking at being an average conf and this is a concern or the big 12 does more with less or the recruiting rankings are flawed.

  • you guys are also forgetting about the fact that there are MANY more recruits in the state of Texas than in some of the other states like Arkasas or Alabama. I would venture to say that the 500th ranked recruit in Texas (if there is one) could be a top 100 in many other states. This really imbalances the rating system.

    Some of Baylor's 3 stars would be 4 stars in other states. Recruiting rankings suck. Have any of our 1st round draft picks even been 4 stars. RGIII may have been, but I don't remember.

  • So you're saying that Baylor has nearly the same number of 1st rounders as Alabama and nary a 5* in sight.

    Therefore Baylor is better at scouting talent and better at developing talent than Alabama. So why not go to the #1 place in the country for developing 1st round talent if you're a 5* player??

    Seems pretty straightforward to me!
