The Cowboys and Redskins have been docked cap space by the NFL for front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 league year.
Cowboys $10mm
Redskins $36mmYes, $THIRTY SIX MILLION!!!! It can be spread over the next two league years, but that is a monster hit.
I don't think Griffin will be playing for the Redskins.

The 'trade' isn't official until tomorrow, therefore it can be rescinded today. If you're the Redskins, can you afford to have 1) No first round draft picks for the next 2 years and 2) No salary cap money to go after free agents.
You can have one or the other, but not both.

You guys are kidding right? There is no way the Redskins all of a sudden back out of this. They have what, roughly $50 million in cap space before this hit? So they can spread it out over 2 years, or just take the hit next year. If you're Washington this will have ZERO influence on your decision to trade.

They aren't cap strangled. They can spread the hit out over two years, and that's if they don't release players to free up more space (which they will). Washington has had 20 QBs in 15 years. You have 1 chance to draft a player like Griffin. You will do this. What are Roberts other options? Cleveland? No way. Hard to pull against the Browns but they're easy to pull for because they suck. Olympics aren happening. Him wearing burgundy and gold are.

I don't think some in here understand how the NFL works in terms of cap space and money.
There is absolutely NO WAY they have the ability to sign what they need to be competitive over the next 2 years now. Simply none. They aren't looking for depth in the draft or free agency, they're looking for STARTERS, and with this, they aren't going to be able to do it. That means they're going to be relying on the draft, and as someone told me, "They draft like the Raiders."
Robert needs to be on the phone yesterday telling them he's not going to play for them.

Their defense was competitive last year. Their passing was anemic. They may not be fixed next year, but with essentially $50 million in cap space over the next two years, they're not as far as you think.
I think we're just going to disagree on this, but they don't need to buy a bunch of superstars. You can get solid talent in this league to fill gaps, but the biggest gap they have right now is behind center. Welcome to the Nations Capital Robert!

Why do they have to replace all of the above?
I think your points are valid, I just disagree. 2 first round draft picks don't replace 10 starters (and I think who they must replace is debatable). You HAVE to spend money somewhere. You also have to hit on draft picks in rounds 2-7.

Landry is going to David Boston his way out of the league.
They already cut their other safety.
Hall is old
Their other corner is ok.
WR's = All old
TE = don't have to replace if they keep Davis, but still need 2 good ones in today's league
LT/RT will be at 10 years in 2 years. That's about replacement time at the tackle position
Fletcher is in his 15th year, can he make another 2-3??
Bowen's contract will be up in 3 seasons. HE's an average player.
