SDSU Head Coach getting crushed on Yahoo

South Dakota State Coach Scott Nagy Forces Wife To Choose Him Over Two Sons

Father knows best, unless he doesn't.

The head coach of a Cinderella in this year's NCAA basketball tournament raised some eyebrows with his decision to a family scheduling dilemma.

Scott Nagy and his wife, Jamie, had to decide what was more important this weekend: His South Dakota State squad plays Baylor in the opening round game in the NCAA Tournament while two of his sons, Nick and Tyler, are playing in the South Dakota state basketball tournament. Nick, a senior, might be taking part in his final high school game.

Jamie Nagy struggled to figure out what to do. But her husband made the call:

"I made a decision for her," Nagy said during a news conference in Albuquerque. "I said, 'You're married to me. You were with me before we had Nick. So I think you should be with me.' Our boys understand that."

Nagy has coached the Jackrabbits for 17 seasons, taking the program from Division II to Division I with a solid .616 winning percentage. He's a member of the Delta State Sports Hall of Fame. Nagy began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Lou Henson at the University of Illinois.

In 2009, Nagy coached a game against North Dakota barefoot in an effort to raise money for victims of the big earthquake in Haiti. Nagy's adopted daughter, Naika, is from a city close to the quake's epicenter.

Although the coach will likely be denounced for his surprising decision, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports mom and dad will watch their sons play their high school game via an Internet video feed before South Dakota State plays No. 3 seed Baylor in the South Regional opening-round game.

  • I actually completely agree with the coach. But that's just me.

  • I also don't see a problem with what the coach said and did. makes sense to me. you put your marriage first - that's best for the kids every time. unfortunately, too many parents don't understand that putting your marriage first is actually an unselfish move w/r/t kids.

The Bible is pretty clear about putting your spouse first an kids second. I think many marriages could be salvaged if they practiced this

  • I also agree. The family is only as strong as the marriage. That being said, if he's coaching the game, I'm not sure how much he will get out of her being there, whereas the boys might be more encouraged.

  • If you look at it as just a husband and wife thing then yeah I get it, but as a father that's a pretty crappy thing to say.

It's his sons last HS basketball game, he should have at least one parent there to support him. Nagy comes across a pretty selfish guy.

    I'm with Cammo.

    God
    Spouse
    Kids
    Everything else.

    In that order.

However, I will say that, if I were in his shoes, I would tell my wife to stay with the kids. He's going to be very busy with the team so I'm not sure his wife being there is being that supportive.

  • I agree with what he says but why would you say that in a press conference?

Haha apparently some high schoolers from here in Flower Mound decide to throw a project x style party but they didn't want to do it at their house. So what did they do? They broke into a newly completed 500K house and trashed the place. Kids are going to jail...

    Happened in Houston as well.

  • My mother completely disagrees and says she needs to be with the boys. I asked her what she would do. I don't care so long as Baylor wins.

    BuGrad95

  • Quite frankly, it's none of our business. I guess once again the media is making a big deal out of this. If the family is fine with this, then that is the right decision. Everyone else needs to stay out of it.

    Dusty Bear

  • it is none of our business until the national press made it a topic. I don't think this has anything to do with the Biblical references about putting your marriage first. Nagy will coach a ton more games but this is his son's last high school game. I don't care what they decide to do but I certainly don't think it has any Biblical relationship regardless of what they do.

Maybe I'm alone on this, but I do not let the national media decide my business.
