Shocked to be saying this...

  • Maybe it's anger at mental lapses, lack of leadership, first-half sleepwalking, hero complexes or poor coaching/development but something is really bothering more this year than two years ago or prior. I am not X or really that negative normally about this program. Here is how frustrated:

    1. Honestly don't care who comes back. While it could mean us having a lousy year, I think I would rather watch a group of guys, still pretty talented, work hard over 2 to 3 years and get back in tourney the real way. If IA or CJ are silly enough to not learn the D League lesson, I don't want them impacting team. I want more gathers types that will learn over the years to score more than long, lanky rivals guys with no post game.

    2. I love what Drew has done for program but would be surprised more than sad if he found another job. If we are as committed to sports as we seem to be the last few years, we will find a way to pay for a program coach. Less devastating than a few years back.

    3. Drews future, in my opinion, is dependent upon his ability to do some housecleaning this year on staff. However he has done it with recruiting, his inability to develop players will cost him recruiting in the future. This will mean that coaching guys is more important than ever, which is concerning.

You are usually level headed, but I personally believe this is a over reaction. Not trying to convince you otherwise, but I don't find the outlook near as devestating as you do.

  • 1. I was at this place on Miller last year. We have started to recruit better motors excepting one this year. 1 fixes 3.

    2. He isn't going anywhere. But if he chose to then we could pay and make a good decision.

    3. We need to better focus our recruiting eye to current skill over athletic upside.

  • Your number 2 is what some of us have been saying. What gets frustrating is when people jump on here to tell you that we "can never do better" which may or may not be true.

  • I think a person has to be really careful of what you ask for. Drew has this thing going pretty well and I think its only gonna get better. I don't think he's the best coach in the nation but he's also a long way from the worse. I would have to be really drunk to ask for this

I think it's frustrating that someone really thinks we could do better with someone other than Drew. In the entire history of our school we haven't had the success that Drew has had, so history tells you we can't get anyone better. I will simply ask, if you really think we can do better, please tell me who you think that person would be? It's not Few, Stevens or Smart.

  • Great discussion.

I will add this question, if Drew is such a great coach and someone that we could never replace, then why has no other school come after Drew after either of his elite 8 runs?

Other schools have come after all of our other successful program's coaches.

And don't give me the Memphis example. Those who know what happened their know it was not a mutual interest.

Just because you didn't hear about it doesn't mean that there hasn't been interest. There has been. In the two cases I know Scott was completely loyal to Baylor. At this point, Scott's future at Baylor is more up to him than anyoen else. Ian isn't looking to fire him. I doubt seriously the whinings of internet tough guys have an iota of influence on him leaving.

I am shocked that people who post under assumed ID's on the internet have no influence, just blows my whole world. Actually my world is pretty screwed or I wouldn't even respond to this

  • Just to clarify, I am not anywhere near hoping for or predicting Drew to be gone. Quite the opposite. Just saying that, to Ashley's point, not as devestaging a thought as it was a few years ago because I think (hope I am right) that the school has moved to more sports minded. In the day, you could really say that BU was just sort of coasting along in a big conference. I think the fears of the last few years has changed everything. I think we are committed to spending the money to be competitive even beyond the one thing that apparently matters, football.

I really don't think my points are whining or being that negative. Just saying that I, personally, am in a different mindset.

  • The Drew haters here were the target of that and clearly jp1214 lacks insight on the ad naseum rantings here.

  • To set the record straight...I am not a Drew hater. I have nothing against the guy personally. And I think he was the right guy to take over our program back in 2003. I will always be greatful to him for the rebuild job he did here. It was nothing short of amazing. He built a program when no one thought that would be possible.

However, as an alumni of Baylor and as a donor of Baylor, I will never put one person or one player above the overall good of our program. No one person is bigger than Baylor basketball. It is my right as a graduate and as a financially committed stakeholder to express my opinion and my concern. I don't do it out of some sort of enjoyment revolving around thr criticism of Scott Drew.

I have real concerns that while Drew was great for bringing Baylor to relevance and building the foundation of a program, he is not the person that will maintain Baylor basketball among the upper half of the Big 12, compete for conference titles, and take our teams to the NCAA tournament consistently.

I care about the direction of our program. So I stand up and say something. Even when that something is not very popular. Just wanted to set the record straight one more time on that.

I know what you mean. The tired old line that lancebu is using that we can't hire anybody is over-used. I know he means well but it has been used so much that people keep repeating it believing it more each time. Hopefully people will read Ashley post and see that understanding that we have options doesn't mean we want to excercise the options. I just want guys first with motor and usable skils in our system. If they have great upside beyond that then great.

  • Drew has a great staff. Drew himself runs a loose ship and wants his players to have fun. Compared to other programs, there is a lot more freedom and lack of discipline. That is Drew's style. It is one of thing that players like about him.

  • I'd first like to state that even discussing firing Scott Drew at this point in time is beyond ridiculous, but since the discussion is being had...

I agree with those of y'all saying that we have the ability to make a good a hire...partly because of our recently found commitment to athletics and partly because Scott Drew has made Baylor basketball a more attractive job. That being said, just because we have the ability to make a good or even great hire, doesn't guarantee that we will. How many coaches have seemed like homerun hires at the time but they just didn't work out for whatever reason?

I understand sometimes you have to take risks in order to get a program reach it's potential, but here is the problem: We are one bad hire away from starting from scratch. If we fired Scott Drew and the next hire drove the program into the ground, the coach after that would not get to build off of what Scott Drew had established...he would be starting over. I'm stating the obvious here, but It is a lot easier for Carolina and Kentucky to pull the trigger on firing a coach that is not meeting expectations. A bad coaching hire can only do so much damage to a blueblood program. North Carolina made a bad hire with Matt Doeherty and two years after firing him they are cutting down the nets. Kentucky makes a bad hire with Billy Clyde and they go 35-3 the year after they fire him. At the end of the day, Carolina is still Carolina and Kentucky is still Kentucky. Bad coaching hires can't drive bluebloods to the depths of basketball hell. It would only take one bad hire for a program of Baylor's stature to destroy any and all momentum we've created over the last several years. Art Briles didn't get the luxury of building off of what Grant Teaff did, he had to build his own program. By the time Briles got to Baylor, everything Teaff did for the program had been burned to the ground.

Another thing to consider is that even if we were to make a good/great coaching hire, how many up and coming coaches do you think are out there that are really going to view Baylor as a destination job? I don't know if Scott views Baylor as a destination job, but I get the impression he does. It may just be my perception, but I feel like after a couple coaches bolt from your school, other coaches start thinking of your school as a stepping stone job. Over a 7 year period, Tulsa had 4 coaches (Tubby Smith, Steve Robinson, Bill Self, and Buzz Peterson) that left for greener pastures. Yes, I know it is Tulsa, but Mark Few has stuck it out at Gonzaga when most people thought he would be gone years ago. There is something to be said for having a great coach that isn't looking to get out of town the first chance he gets. It is hard to establish a program when you're head coaching position is a revolving door.
