Spring defense battles

Three positions will have major battles this Spring

  • Great work- some battles to watch for

  • unbelievable that we appear to have so much talent waiting in the wings. A player live Javonte Magee or like Shawn Oakman, actually having to sit and wait. I love how our team is shaping up this coming year. With a little luck and team chemistry, we could have something truly special on our hands

    Northwest Bear

  • and they will be here for at least 2 more years. Oakman is freakish. He may run 4.7, but his reach makes up .2. He doesn't look right out on the field with how me makes 6'4 260 look small.

  • I love the idea of having talented underclassmen fighting for playing time and pushing all these upperclassmen. Nothing motivates like a little competition.

    ct_wallace

  • at some point the best players (most productive) should be on the field regardless of experience. like Lache and Salubi last year.

  • Nothing on Magee moving to DT? I have always wondered if he wouldn't end up there. Palmer is a player to watch on the DL.

Not at this time on Magee.

I couldn't get confirmation on it, so I left it off.

even if there is no Dixon/Holl switch, Safety should still be an interesting position to watch this Spring. replacing Hicks is gonna be big. he wasn't uber-talented, but we saw how much he meant to the defense, while he was out for a month.

if Morton can hadle it back there, then i wouldn't mind seeing him play the CS spot. having him, Meech, and Williams all on the field at the same time cant do anything but help our coverage. Not sure that KJ wouldn't be a bit of a liability in run support though...

  • Correct, there are so many variables and players that could move there if they don't win the corner spot or move to safety move to NB, etc... that it will be it's own article.

  • Brian, thanks for the article...can't wait for this spring to unfold. I hope Goodson turns out well, I personally was not impressed during the first three games of last year against lame competition. Also, if Williams is healthy, like he was at year's end, I'll be a little surprised if he loses his starting job.

It sure is nice to have options...

i agree that Goodson's performance was somewhat underwhelming, after the glowing reviews he got coming out of the Spring and Summer, but his only real flaw, that i saw, was being poor at playing the ball in the air (i understand this is a pretty major flaw for a CB in our league). if he can improve his ball skills to where they're just average, then he'll be a really good CB for us. i know that's a pretty big "if" though, based on our inability to teach our DBs this in recent years.

Something I know Earl does to help with his ball skills is during the offseason to warm up everyday he wont do DB drills like most guys do he will do wideout drills. Fade routes for jump ball situations. 5 yard comeback routes for covering wideouts that run stops routes, five over the shoulder catches to each shoulder for those wideouts who love the back shoulder catches. I wonder if this would work for Baylor?

Also he catches hundreds of tennis balls a day says it helps his reaction time and hand eye coordination.

  • Williams > Morton.

I don't understand some of the excitement people have over Morton. From the Alamo Bowl to all last season, his play was a huge disappointment. I thought Williams was terrific the last part of the season, and would rather have a youngster or Goodson man the other CB spot.

i agree with you that Williams has been better than Morton, over the course of their careers, when both are healthy. i'd stop short of saying KJ has been a "huge disappointment" though. he was an afterthought as a national recruit, and a late add to upgrade athleticism in the secondary. we're not talking about a blue-chipper who's come in and crapped the bed...

i don't know that i'm necessarily "excited" about Morton, and a possible move to S (kinda think he was originally brought in to play here), or just intrigued to see if it could work. he'd definitely upgrade our coverage back there. as long as he could handle the responsibilities of the position, and not be a liability in run support, then how could it be a bad thing. of course, the last two things mentioned (responsibilities and run support) are pretty big "ifs" right now.

anyway, it'll be interesting to watch.

  • I forgive Williams/Morton for their shotty play for most of '11, as they were thrown into the fire as soon as they walked on campus. However, since that time, our CB play has been both bad and erratic...save Williams late last year. We've had lots of injuries at CB...Goodson, Morton, Williams, Stephenson...and we simply have little idea what we have right now. That's why spring is so intriguing.

i agree, Clavine. what IS exciting to me, regarding our secondary, is that we seemingly have more qualified bodies than we've had in a very long time. we just need a handful of them to step up and be playmakers.

Very true. When is the last time we were 2 deep with legit B12 quality at DL and LB? I'm not sure about the quality in the secondary, but you're right about having options...thankfully, this means no Chance Casey or Josh Wilson.

Completely agree. We've made big strides in overall depth across the defense and I think this is the year we start seeing some improvement. It better be the year anyway....
