Titans fan here. Skinny on Wright??

  • Hey guys, congrats on the double 1st-rounders! cheers Wish my university could say the same....grumble

I figured you guys are the right ones to talk to about Wright. So far, I've heard nothing but positive! I know he can flat out ball! But you got any juicy details? How 'bout off-the-field? Character concerns? Is he known for being a descent blocker? (CJ1K could use the help)

Anyway, good luck this year! Sounds like you have a solid replacement for RGIII

  • You will be hard pressed to find anyone that says a negative word about Wright. Great kid on and off the field. He doesn't take plays off. Tough-minded. Blocks well. Got better each year. Plays through nagging injuries. I think he will become a Titan favorite. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Go take a look at the K-state film and start smiling. He is solidly built and I believe he'll be a solid blocker but it was not the key to his production for us.

    1713Baylor

  • The only negative(and this is nit picky) on Wright in my opinion is while in college he couldn't make a great play without talking smack to the DB trying to cover him. In the pros you won't have to worry about that because they are allowed to celebrate a good play. Off the field he is very behind the scenes/quiet (probably seemed that way because RG3 was everywhere around here).

As said, this kid is a baller and is going to be a stud. Especially if he is lined up in the slot, there is no LB/NB that can cover KW. If he lines up out wide then a #2 CB will have his hands full as well. Love him opposite Britt who could be requiring double coverage on his own.

The big ? on KW is how he will handle press coverage you typically see in the pros. If he is able to play thru that then he will be a star.

    My 2 cents

    Bears131

  • To take full advantage of Wright's talents, Locker needs to be able to catch passes over the middle. Wright may even be your 3rd string QB in a pinch.

...and he's a pretty good receiver.

He's a great kid on and off the field. Very quiet. He played basketball his first couple of years...he's extremely athletic and can jump over small buildings. haha

I'm exciting for y'all..you're going to love KW! Can't wait for him to prove the naysayers wrong.

  • To this day, Kendall Wright's JR year (HS) basketball highlight video is the best I've ever seen. He is a winner and a freakish athlete.

  • the two knocks i'd have on wright are his tendency to drop passes (got better and better about this through his years at Baylor though) and he'll need some work on getting off press coverage (whenever he plays on the outside). with our offense, he rarely had guys up in his grill, which will change at the NFL level.

the positives are plentiful though. you have absolutely no worries on his character. off the field, he's a very nice kid. he seems to be very quiet and reserved, and always very polite in interviews.

on the field, his best quality, in my opinion, is he honestly believes that he is always the best player on the field. his confidence is through the roof, and he feeds off that. after that, he's a very tough kid, who's not afraid to do the dirty work (blocking, going over the middle). finally, he's just a freak of an athlete. he's only 5'`10", but the guy can jump out of the stadium, so he plays much bigger than that.

I said this exact same thing to my buddy the other day and then busted this video out on my phone because he didn't believe me. My buddy is a hs bball coach and was amazed. I still love watching that video every once in a while.

  • No one in the Big 12 could cover him for four years. Some of those same CB's are in the league now. You will be extremely happy with Kendall.

I saw lots of Titan fans pissed on the Rivals main board last night and did not understand why. He is a shy guy, does not want credit for anything, and does not want to talk to the media. He will get jawing at corners and then burn their ass down the sideline.

  • Kendall was a year behind me in school and I watched him drop 50 points in a middle school basketball game as a 7th grader.

Talked with a middle school coach of his the other day and he said that Kendall could have gone either way after middle school, but chose to work hard and keep himself in line.

This coach eventually moved to Gilmer where they have put D1 players out every year and he said Kendall was a better athlete than players like Manuel Johnson and Stephen Hodge who both made NFL rosters.

  • You are getting a great down to earth country boy. As said a freak athlete. I will be watching him for sure !!

  • Somebody for the Titans should arrange for a dunk expo by KW... it's really just remarkable. Guy is one of the purest athletes I've ever seen. He could never have walked into a weight room in college and still made an NFL roster.

He also possesses the rarest of traits in athletes... the elusive "playmaker" trait. He just has an immeasurable ability to do indescribable things at critical moments. He'll make incredible catches, or make a simple catch and then make an incredible move on a defender, or he'll just end up in the right place at the right time... and he did that time after time after time in his 4 years at Baylor. He obviously has RG3 to thank for a lot of his crazy career stats at Baylor... but IMO RG3 should thank Kendall for bailing him out or extending lots of stats for RG3 (Griffin threw lots of very basic screen, flat, or hitch passes to Wright that turned into 15 yard+ gains).

Thats funny you mentioned that, because just from watching a handful of highlights videos, that really stood out to me. He just seems so elated out there, I see a lot of energy and toughness.

I believe all our fans will eventually be happy with this pick. It's just that everybody was expecting to fill a bigger need (defense).

I mean, hey.... Our entire fanbase was absolutely p!ssed when we drafted CJ. haha Then the dust settled, we did our research on him, etc.

  • Some of the most amazing plays I've seen in football were by Kendall Wright. He's been really fun to watch.

2008 Baylor vs. Iowa State - Wright takes a basic screen to the right side of the field, runs to the right sideline almost out of bounds, side steps an Iowa State defender, then suddenly just cuts across the field to the left... all the way across and turns a 6 yard play into a 50 yard TD diving for the far left end zone pylon.

2008 Baylor vs. Texas Tech in Lubbock - last play of the 1st half. Baylor has it at the Tech 12 yard line with 1 play before halftime. Griffin drops back, gets ambushed by three blitzing Tech players. Griffin breaks one tackle and as he's going down just lobs it high into the end zone. Must have been 7 or 8 players in a grouping... Wright (at 5-10) just heaves above the crowd and pulls it down. Pure Wright athleticism.

2009 Baylor vs. Wake Forest - very similar to vs. Iowa State the previous year... Griffin laterals to Wright on the right side of the field at about the WF 40. Looks like a basic gain of 6 toward the right sideline, but then Wright stops on a dime, makes a radical cut back across the field and eventually cruises into the end zone on the far left side of the field.

2011 Baylor vs. Oklahoma - well documented play where Griffin throws hard over the middle, is deflected by Baylor's Tevin Reese (and also by an OU linebacker), ball shoots down the field and Wright catches it in stride and takes it 70 yards for a TD. Amazing play.

2011 Baylor vs. Kansas State - Griffin lobs it 40ish yards off his back foot, Wright just "goes and gets it" in one of the most acrobatic catches I've seen in years... Ball's originally over his left shoulder, Wright is running full speed, dives, catches the ball on the right side of his body, and lands in bounds.

2011 Baylor vs. Kansas State - Griffin throws hard over the middle to Wright and high. Wright springs up, catches the ball that looked to be overthrown, lands and IMMEDIATELY sidesteps a KState defender, then turns down the left sidline - with the last 19 yards being the now fairly famous "tight roping the sideline" finishing with a contorting dive for the pylon for the touchdown. Jaw dropping.

  • Wright has better acceleration than any WR in the draft, though not the straight line speed of some. He is deadly in space. As has mentioned, he had great hands his frosh year than got some dropsies when RGIII went down. Those were completely gone his senior year. Hasn't been mentioned, but the guy is also very durable (knock on wood). He played through a lot injuries his senior year that would have sidelined a lot of guys.

A knock on him - Sometimes a three yard completion is just a three yard completion. In college he could turn those into seven yard completions by reversing field, going backwards, and creating a circus. In the NFL moves like that will turn into a 2 yard loss. In the NFL he will have to stay disciplined in making the catch and getting up field even it is for minimal gain.

good point, roughneck. i will say that he got better at just ducking his head and getting what he could get as his career progressed, but he definitely looks for the big play every time he has his hands on the ball, which could get him in trouble at the next level.

Anyway, good luck this year! Sounds like you have a solid replacement for RGIII

Kendall Wright plays each down like his hair is on fire. He plays harder than anyone else on the field. Briles said yesterday he plays with more passion than any other player he has ever coached. He plays like he thinks he is the best player on the field and some times he was even with RGIII. His short area quickness makes him hard to cover off the line. That is why you see him catching so many slant type patterns. He is almost violent in his change of direction. This season when they lined him up outside on plays, so that it was harder to double him, the CBs could not cover him. He is short (5-10.25) but he is stout. He is completely fearless and will go over the middle. He played with an ankle sprain all season long but never missed a game.

He ran a 4.41-4.46 at pro day but like Terrance Ganaway he probably can run that in full pads. He did not get caught all year unless the player was already behind him. You watch that Oklahoma game where he killed but he also had an 80 yarder get called back due to a BS arm out hold on the LT. Baylor no huddled and ran deep all day long. That is how you know the body fat thing was not correct. You could not be out of shape to play in this offense. TCU, OU, UT all tried to man cover him being arrogant and he took them deep.

Go youtube his HS basketball highlights to see what type of athlete. Even at his size he can dunk on people. He was on the Baylor basketball team as a freshman.

He was a HS QB and he can throw the football.

His type of game will be ready to go day one.

I think he quit doing the reverse field thing this season. Kind of like Tevin Reese he seemed to get low and shoot for the straight ahead yardage he could get. He had done it the last three years and sometimes too much.

That catch against tech at the end of that half was one of the most awesome things I had seen on a football field. Nothing really spectacular in that it wasn't a one-handed catch or some acrobatic feat like flipping over into the endzone, but it was just impressive. He's 5'10 and in the middle of a crowd of defenders out-jumps them all to pull down the ball. So very impressive.

His highlights against KSU were unreal. Griffin overshadowed him nationally but in the league and certainly at Baylor people were very well aware of him and his abilities.

Also, the guy is a monster competitor. I remember going to a practice before the start of his freshman season (2008), and they ran a running play to his side, and this little freshman slot receiver saw a linebacker coming in to make a play and he just threw himself into the backer and just knocked the guy out of the play. One of those huge blocks with a loud POP that made everyone gasp and cringe then cheer. Wright popped back up and everyone gave him an ovation.

You've got a competitor and a freak athlete.

One of my complaints with him was that he always wanted to make more out of a play than was there and thus would dance around so much in the hopes of finding an opening that he usually just allowed the defenders time to get to him sometimes for losses.

However, his senior year you could see he worked on his discipline in that area. He more looked to make the most out of each play than trying to make a highlight play. You watch his highlights this year and when he makes his moves to extend plays he's making smart moves and decisions. Even when there was nothing left to gain and he was about to be tackled, he'd still dive and reach for those last few yards.

Oh and he has great hands despite what people say about his hands size.

Dude is a football player to his core.

We are going to miss him a lot.

  • I didn't see mention of the big catch against OU. Kendall made that play because he ran his route hard and all the way through, even though he wasn't the intended receiver. He made his luck on that play. Most receivers give up on that and the ball is incomplete.

Yeah he was trying to clear out that back S so that he could not help on the pass to Tevin.
