places to eat in austin

I'm in Austin for the weekend was hoping someone could suggest cool places to eat with good food while I am down here already planning on the original salt lick tomorrow

Maudies for Tex Mex - the original location on Lake Austin Blvd or the Westlake location by the 360 bridge are my favorite locations, but there are a few more. I recommend the Rockin' Ruthann's - 2 chicken burritos smothered in 3 kinds of cheese, chili con carne and onions.
Guerros on Congress would be my other Mexican recommendation. More tradional Mexican, but still Tex-Mex. George W's favorite restaurant when he was governor.
Sandys Frozen Custard on Barton Springs Rd. Get a burger and fries and finish with a frozen custard.
Shady Grove on Barton Springs Rd. - Hard to describe. Comfort food but with a twist and nice outdoor patio.
I could list 20 more but if I had one trip I'd hit those.
Sure others will have suggestions.
Also under consideration on my list:
Hula Hut is a very popular family spot - also on Lake Austin Blvd and it has extesnsive deck space looking out on Lake Austin. Tex Mex mixed with a Hawaiian kick. It's Chuy's-owned but different than a normal Chuy's due to the Hawaiian infusion.

Bono's suggestions are all good but I will add some more with tips.
BBQ: Hard to beat the original Salt Lick for atmosphere and food. BYOB if you didn't already know.
Burgers: Hopdoddy on S. Congress for awesome burgers w/ interesting toppings and sauces. P. Terry's for quick fast food burgers that are waaay better than In-N-Out but similar in style.
TexMex: Definitely Maudies Milagro (on 360 by the bridge) is my favorite. Hula Hut is cool but on the weekend you will wait an hour at a minimum for food that's not entirely worth it.
Sushi: Uchi or Uchiko (if you can get in) are totally worth it, but bring two wallets for the bill. I would suggest getting there around 6ish to have drinks and wait for a table or if a spot opens at the sushi bar you can eat there.
Coffee/Dessert: Mozarts has two levels of decks with view of Lake Austin. They brew their own beans and have Amy's Ice Cream and pies and other desserts.

Some very good recos here.
Some of my favs...
Torchy's Tacos, any location. Fantastic, unique tacos.
Hut's Hamburgers. An Austin staple, and ridiculously good burgers.
For good, fairly original sushi that won't break the bank, try Piranha Killer Sushi on San Jac.
If you want hardcore comfort food that is REALLY good and REALLY rich, try Max's Wine Dive, right next to Piranha. Very cool place and fantastic food.

for bbq in austin you need to go to Franklin's or J Muellers and leave salt lick to the tourists. My fav mexican place is curra's on oltorf.

I'll just give you some advice. Get a reservation or be prepared to wait. There aren't many places here in Austin that you can get in quickly

Do people still go to Dan's or Fran'd for burgers?
I really like Romeos the Chipotle Chicken Pasta would be my final meal request before being put to death.
Honestly, Austin has some fantastic food, if you are a foodie there is a lot to love down there.

If you're willing to drive to Salt Lick, just go ahead and go to Lockhart and fall into pure BBQ heaven.

muddybrazos nailed it on the bbq. Franklin's and J Muellers are the best brisket you will have in your life. (That is not an exaggeration.) For a bit of a funkier Austin feel check out a couple east side favorites:

Totally agree. I went to Austin two years ago when the Bears beat UT in Austin, and on the way back to Houston we went through Lockhart. That may have been the best 24 hours of my life.

Franklin bbq, fatty brisket worth the hour wait. No joke. Saltlick is for tourists.
Ranch 616 is good.

Torchy's on south 1st street. Best tacos in the world in lots of innovative combinations.
If you like ceviche the Curras on Oltof in the SoCo region is the best I've had. Incredibly fresh and well done.
